Dental Implants in Lafayette, LA
For patients with missing teeth, dental implants can restore the appearance and function of natural teeth. Implants are versatile and allow our patients to enjoy the benefits of dental restoration without the necessity of numerous replacements or lengthy maintenance rituals. Dental implants are an excellent permanent solution for the problem of missing teeth.
Dr. James Finley, D.M.D. offers dental implants
Dental implants consist of three parts: a bio-compatible titanium post, an abutment, and a tooth-colored crown. When replacing missing teeth with a dental implant, the titanium post is implanted into the jaw bone. The dental implants will fuse with the jaw bone over time in a process called osseointegration. This process replicates the relationship between the bone and the root of the tooth and generally takes three to six months. Once the dental implants have fused with the bone and are secure, Dr. Finley will place the abutment, a connector piece that rises above the gum line to accommodate the crown. The crown is the part that looks like your missing teeth.
The Uses of Dental implants
- can replace a single tooth
- may restore a full mouth of missing teeth
- can hold dental bridges in place
- may be used to secure dentures
Dental implants are the preferred replacement for missing teeth. Removable dentures, partial dentures, and fixed bridges do not offer the same stability, versatility, or bio-compatibility as dental implants. Most importantly, dental implants offer a crucial added benefit over traditional methods of replacing missing teeth because they preserve bone.
When you have missing teeth, bone deterioration begins. Over time, the bone loss experienced at the site of the missing teeth can cause changes in your facial structure, most often exemplified by a sunken look. For those patients who select dentures before deciding upon implants, bone grafts may be necessary to place dental implants, because the bone loss may be advanced.
